Love the idea of making your own hand-printed books? Me too, and I don’t think we’re alone.
West Dean College in West Sussex is running a six-day course titled ‘Text and Image – The Art of Letterpress Printing’, which promises to equip you to “print text from metal type and printing images using other simple relief processes. In doing so you will combine text and image using techniques that date back hundreds of years.”
Course leader Sarah Bryant says: “The beautiful, crisp impression and the possibilities for elegantly combining images and text make letterpress printing a unique and exciting endeavour. Letterpress has been adopted by artists, poets and people in many other creative fields for just this reason.”
The course runs from Saturday 3 to Friday 9 August and costs £656. It may not be cheap, but if it gives you the skill to produce the books you’ve pictured in your head, it could be worth it!
